ABOUT MY YEAR IN HONDURAS WITH PROJECT TRUST...
WHO IS PROJECT TRUST?
Project Trust is a Scottish charity which organises 8 and 12 month overseas gap year placements for 17-19 year old school leavers. The placements are spread throughout Africa, Asia, Oceania and Latin America and they range from Primary and Secondary school teaching, TESOL teaching, Outward Bound, Social Care and Youth Work and Medical. every year, they select and send around 300 teenagers abroad with the aim to enhance the lives of other young people around the world through providing education and support.
WHAT DO THEY DO?
Project Trust is based on the Isle of Coll, a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland. It is there where they carry out the Selection and Training courses as well as Debriefing (which takes place once you have completed your time abroad). The staff are wonderful and are allocated to a country group as your country coordinator; this member of staff will be your number one contact during your time away, along with your country representative, who for Honduras, fortunately lives in the country so is very easy to contact when needed.
HOW AM I INVOLVED?
I have always been aware of Project Trust and what they do as many of my cousins have completed Gap Year placements with them so for a long time now I have known it was something I wanted to do. My Selection course took place in April 2018, over a year before my Training course came about in July 2019, and then I said goodbye to friends and family in August. My project is based in a small rural Honduran village called Candelaria and my position is a primary school teacher for Kindergarten to Grade 6, and deciding to do this year has been the best decision I have ever made.
